Mount Kenya National Park is located 175 km from Nairobi and was opened to visitors in December 1949. It covers an area of about 715 square kilometers around Mt Kenya, between altitudes of 11,000ft and 17,058ft above sea level. At 5,199m the mountain is the second highest peak in Africa. Mt. Kenya is an important water tower in the country. Spectacular scenery is an important aspect of the park, with lovely lakes, tarns, glaciers, peaks and natural mineral springs in the area. Mount Kenya National Park was established in 1949 and covers an area of 715 square kilometers (276 square miles). It comprises of small sections of the higher forest and bamboo forest, alpine moorlands, glaciers and tarns. It is dominated by the two peaks of the mountain, Batian (5,200 meters – 17,058 feet) and Nelion (5,188 meters – 17,022 feet).
The visitor to Mount Kenya National Park does not need to be an experienced mountaineer, and access to the alpine moorlands is easy through the Sirimon Track which branches to the right off the main Nanyuki-Isiolo Road several kilometers north of Nanyuki. The trail passes through magnificent stands of juniper and podocarpus before reaching the high altitude bamboo forest with mighty gorges and trout streams. Elephants and buffalos are common and Black Rhino exist but are not often seen. In the early morning there are always Bushbuck, Bush Duiker, Leopard and the elusive Bongo if one is very lucky.
December to March are the sunniest months and perhaps the best time to visit....
