Laikipia plateau straddles the Equator north west of Mount Kenya. Nanyuki is the main town in Laikipia region. There are two rivers, Ewaso Nyiro and Ewaso Narok which water the region. Altitude varies from 1500m to 1950m. The environment consists of open grasslands, acacia bushlands, cedar forests and kopjes. Laikipia is dry and cool.
Laikipia is larger than all of Kenya’s national parks combined except Tsavo. It has been made famous by Kuki Gallman autobiography, ‘I Dreamed of Africa’ how she lived in this secluded part of Africa. It is an area where tourists are accommodated in private land and they are treated more like houseguests than tourists..
Laikipia is home to the highest diversity of mammals in Africa. It is a combination of private conservancies and ranches spanning close to a million acres largely unfenced. This provides home to unique, threatened mammals that are only found in this region. Grevy’s zebra, Reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, zorilla, stripped hyena, aardwolf, wild dog and black leopard.
There are many things that differentiate Laikipia from the rest of Kenya but the major one is how different cultures have joined forces to support conservation under the umbrella body Laikipia Wildlife Forum (LWF).
Diverse communities including Masai, Samburu, Kikuyu, Pokot, Turkana, Meru and Europeans integrate harmoniously. Conservation here centers on management and sustainable use of natural resources as well as protection and restoration. This way both people and wildlife have benefited from conservation.
Through conservation, Laikipia has continued to record rising wildlife numbers in contrast to declining trend in much of the country and the region. The density of large mammals is higher than anywhere else in the country.
Laikipia and Ewaso Nyiro Ecosystem host over 6,00 elephants, one of the regions with the highest population of the giants in Kenya . Laikipia also hosts the highest populations of the endangered species among them black rhino, Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, wild dogs and Lelwel hartebeest.
Laikipia as a tourist destination has abundant wildlife and spectacular scenery. Visitors experience classic safari free of constraints that apply in national parks and reserves. Night game drives, guided nature walks, riding and cycling are just a few of the exhilarating activities on offer. High levels of community involvement allow visitors privileged access to the cultures and customs of the Mukogodo Masai, Samburu, Pokot and other peoples.
