Immediately west of Lake Manyara is the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA), a vast biosphere reserve where the iconic Maasai people live alongside a bewildering diversity of wildlife. From the lions and elephants that strut fearlessly across the floor of Ngorongoro Crater to the secretive forest birds that flit through its jungle-swathed rim, Ngorongoro can’t be missed, especially if you’re heading to the Serengeti plains.
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an International Biosphere Reserve, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) shares a border with Serengeti National Park to the southwest. Its dominant feature is the geological marvel, the Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera with stunning scenic beauty and the wildlife that teems across its verdant 260 square kilometre floor. The caldera plains are essentially a continuation of the Serengeti ecosystem, supporting a cover of short grass that attracts significant grazers’ concentrations during the rainy season.
